WIM HOF METHOD
The Wim Hof Method was developed by the Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof with his nickname ‘The Iceman’. by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure.
He holds a number of records related to cold exposure. Among them are several records for ice baths, a record for running a half marathon in boxer shorts with bare feet in the snow at minus 20 degrees and another for swimming a 66 meters under the ice.
His extensive training, using ‘cold, hard nature’ as his teacher, has enabled him to learn to control his breathing, heartrate, and blood circulation and to withstand extreme temperatures.
With that he has shown scientifically, that the autonomous nervous system related to the innate immune response, can be willfully influenced, something that was previously unknown to science.
Out of this he developed the Wim Hof Method based on three pillars: Breathing, cold and mental training.
For that the right mindset plays a central role in the ability to cope with the cold, to influence the physiological stress response and to manifest one’s desires in reality (Middendorp et al., 2016 and Muziek et al., 2018). Through specific physical exercises, breathing techniques and meditation, the Wim Hof Method trains mental strength and creates a positive attitude of expectation.
The Wim Hof breathing technique is a combination of controlled hyperventilation and breath retention/air holding. This powerful breathing leads to a deep state of relaxation and thus not only activates the self-healing powers, but has also been shown to lower inflammatory markers in the blood, reduce the sensation of pain and activate specific immune defenses (Kox et al., 2014).
The Wim Hof Method can be practiced by any healthy person. If you have a serious medical condition, consult a doctor before taking an ice bath or trying the Wim Hof Method. It is not recommended to practice the Wim Hof method if you have problems with the heart (e.g. angina pectoris, panic attacks), blood pressure (high blood pressure >160 mmHg) and/or kidneys, asthma, epilepsy, cold urticaria or Raynaud’s syndrome type 2. If you suffer from migraines, it is recommended to be careful with ice baths and to start with cold showers. The Wim Hof method is not recommended for pregnant women.
